Learning/reminder of the week

De-risking

I think a lot more about risk than I have in the past. For the bulk of my professional life, I've been "risk-on" (god that was a fun decade) but now I analyze investments, deals, clients, and most importantly, my time, through a new risk filter.

I'm constantly asking myself "how can I de-risk this?"

Examples of me de-risking:

• The ability to liquidate equity in a startup investment when a secondary round of funding takes place.
• Taking equity in businesses for time investments rather than capital.
• Me having one glass of wine on Saturday night instead of four.
• (Bonus) Turning the tables and de-risking potential clients. I've loved doing this. I just did this with a really large growth marketing proposal. "Mike, if I can't drive you results in 60 days, I will give you a full refund."

This new filter has been super effective for me personally. Far fewer sleepless nights!

Interesting find/tool of the week

We build a lot of websites and the tech just keeps getting better. A team member just sent me a tool called Relume yesterday. It makes it super easy to generate sitemaps and wireframes. I think could be super beneficial for quickly aligning with clients on what the sites need to accomplish.
